Beech Nut

It’s time to take a trip back to your local sweet shop.

Can you remember the treasures you found inside the vending machine? The taste of Beech-Nut chewing gum? Did you get a free packet every fourth turn?

The Spring Chicken community have been sharing memories of the peppermint, spearmint and fruit stripe delights that were wrapped in yellow and green and cost two old pence.

“In my naughty years, I’d buy 5 cigarettes, a book of matches and a packet of Beech-Nut as I thought it disguised the smoke on my breath. My father explained that it didn’t… But I just loved the taste of them!”

“My wife had a craving for Beech-Nut chewing gum when she was pregnant, I had to buy it in bulk”

“I loved Beech-Nut chewing gum. I could hide a pack in my pocket when at school!”

The gum was particularly popular in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s – you may remember singing in the playground:

Beech-Nut chewing gum,
Penny a packet!
First you chew it, then you crack it,
Then you stick it in your jacket!

Or you might remember this ditty:

Beech-Nut chewing gum,
For a penny chew
I’m a jolly Beech-Nut
And so are you

…Or perhaps Beech-Nut wasn’t your favourite, like one of our Spring Chicken Facebook followers:

“Remember it well, but I was a Wrigley’s chewer.”

Nevertheless, we want Beech-Nut back!

  • Beech nut were never on the shelves! Strictly vending machines. Conversely KP chewing gum were on the shelves. Don’t know if the shelf was responsible, but KP were awesome! Only had beech nut if the shop was closed. They were ok,but give me KP any day.👍👍
