It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. Especially on our televisions.
Year after year, Christmas-ad-lovers anticipate a deeply heart-warming and contemplative advert on their screens. Of course, these adverts are John Lewis adverts.
We’ve had the bear and the hare, the man on the moon, Monty the penguin… The lot. But, this year, John Lewis did something a little different.
2018 is the very first time this retailer has partnered with a celebrity for their Christmas advert. The theme about the power of giving indeed remains intact, yet Elton John’s story is arguably the primary focus. The emotional two-minute journey depicts Elton John’s career right from the beginning, with his famous track ‘Your Song’ nostalgically playing.
As with anything, the advert has received mixed receptions.
While loyal fans have reacted with adoration, a few viewers have labelled the advert as ‘irrelevant’ and ‘lacking credibility’.
“The John Lewis Christmas campaign has so many warm memories for me and my family. It’s been a lovely opportunity for me to reflect on my life in music and the incredible journey I have been on, and how first playing my Grandmother’s piano marks the moment when music came into my life. The ad is absolutely fantastic and I’ve truly loved every minute of being a part of it.” – Sir Elton John
