Guide to buying a stairlift

There are three main types of stairlift and one of them will usually fit the layout of your staircase. As staircases are all different, your stairlift will be tailored to your particular stairway. Many people believe stairlifts are fitted to the wall but, in fact, they fit to your stairs or steps via a track – which means there is minimal work and no need to redecorate! With easy to use controls, in-built safety features and attractive fold-away seats, we are sure you’ll find a design that is right for you and your home.

Type 1: Stairlifts for straight stairs

If you have straight stairs you will be recommended a straight stairlift. This is the easiest and cheapest design to make and install as there is no bending of metal when making the aluminium track. Your stairlift will include a choice of upholstery designs, an easy-to-use seatbelt, easy controls built into the arm, wall controls, plus a selection of optional extras so you can customise it for your needs.

  • Straight stairlifts can be installed within 3 working days from the time you order, however if you have an emergency need, do talk to our partner they may have stock they can fit the next day
  • It is important to note that there is virtually no resale value for a stairlift, it’s bespoke to your stairs so it’s like a fitted kitchen where resale is limited
Type 2: Stairlifts for curved stairs

You will be recommended a curved stairlift if you have a staircase or landing that bends.

The rails have to be custom made to the correct angles and then fixed to the steps of your staircase.

Your stairlift will include a choice of upholstery designs, an easy-to-use seatbelt, easy controls built into the arm, wall controls, plus a selection of optional extras so you can customise it for your needs.

  • Multi storey installations are available, if you need to travel up more than one floor
  • As it is a more complex process to build and fit a curved stairlift, the cost is higher than a straight stairlift
  • The time from order to installation is usually within 10-14 working days
  • It is important to note that there is virtually no resale value for a stairlift, it’s bespoke to your stairs so its like a fitted kitchen where resale is limited
Type 3: Stairlifts for outside stairs

An outdoor stairlift will help you to navigate outside steps more easily. These have been especially designed to withstand the unpredictable British weather all year round! The outdoor rail is straight and can only be fitted to solid concrete, solid wood or metal stairs. It comes with a handy protective cover to keep your stairlift clean and dry when not in use.

  • Suitable for straight staircases only
  • Are usually fitted within 3 days from order
  • It is important to note that there is virtually no resale value for a stairlift, it’s bespoke to your stairs so its like a fitted kitchen where resale is limited

The price of your stairlift will vary, depending on the type of staircase you have, the style you choose and how much you want to customise your stairlift. The starting point for a simple new straight stairlift is £2,500, for a simple new curved stairlift prices start at £4,500. Buying a reconditioned stairlift can save you between £700 and £1,000. Prices will include all preparation work, installation and a warranty. Stairlifts can also be rented on a month by month basis. Cost of stairlifts for straight stairs £2,500 – £4,000

A straight stairlift is the easiest to manufacture and the quickest to install these factors are reflected in the price. Usually installed within 3 working days from order.

  • Additional preparatory work such as moving a radiator, trimming a windowsill or installing a power point. This work will all be done by the partner and the cost for it will be included in your written quote
  • More complex installs e.g. a hinged track
  • Selecting more optional extras e.g. bespoke coloured upholstery
  • Seat choice e.g. powered or manual swivel
  • VAT exemption for most users
Cost of stairlifts for curved stairs £4,500-£8,000

Each curved stairlift is made to order to fit the exact measurements of your stairway. They take longer to make and install and this is reflected in the price. Usually installed within 10 to 14 working days from order

Key factors that affect cost:

  • The complexity of the curved track needed for your staircase
  • Additional preparatory work such as moving a radiator, trimming a windowsill or installing a power point. This work will all be done by the partner and the cost for it will be included in your written quote
  • Selecting more optional extras e.g. bespoke coloured upholstery
  • Seat choice e.g. powered or manual swivel
  • If you rent or buy
  • VAT exemption for most users
 Cost of stairlifts for outdoor stairs £3,500-£5,000

Outdoor stairs can only work on straight stairways.

They are weatherproofed to withstand being outside all year round and this is reflected in the price.

Usually installed within 3 working days from order

Key factors that affect cost:

  • Additional preparatory work such as installing a power point, removing a gate etc. This work will all be done by the partner and the cost for it will be included in your written quote
  • Length of the track needed
  • Vat exemption for most users

Checklist for buying a stairlift

The most important step in getting a stairlift is to organise a home visit to discuss options and get an accurate quote. We do understand that asking people into your home can be daunting, so picking a reputable Stairlift company that are members of the BHTA (British Healthcare Trades Association)  is critical. Arrange a home visit

If you use our partner you can book and enjoy a home visit knowing that you are under no obligation to buy.

The home visit will take between 1-2 hours.

As stairlifts are made to fit your stairway there is no other way to get an accurate quote.

Have a friend or family member with you on the visit. It helps you to remember all the questions you want to ask and it is good to reflect with someone after the visit.

Our partner has their staff CRB checked so you can trust who is coming into your home.

The assessor will take measurements of your staircase and listen to your needs and guide you through the range of straight or curved rails, different seats, footplates, colour choices, fabrics and optional extras.

Discuss delivery, installation and aftercare.

Discuss which purchasing option best suits you, whether you’d prefer to rent or buy, or opt for a new or reconditioned model.

Provide you with a written quotation.

Review your personalised quote

At the end of your home visit, after everything has been discussed, the assessor will give you a written quotation there and then. Your bespoke quotation will include details of warranty and service options, with absolutely no hidden costs.

Get your stairlift installed

When you are ready to get your stairlift installed just call up the number on your personal quote and arrange a convenient date for the installation.

Installation takes between two and four hours.

The rails attach to your stairs, not to the wall, so there is minimal mess or disruption.

If building work is required this will be arranged for you prior to the installation, and the costs for this will have been included in your quotation.

The engineers will bring a vacuum cleaner with them so, if there is a little bit of mess they will clean up after themselves.

Don’t feel you need to make them a cup of tea. They’re pretty self -sufficient.

Once the engineers have finished fitting your stairlift they will spend as much time as you need showing you how to use it. They will only leave when you tell them that you feel fully confident and all your questions have been answered.
