I am intolerant to dairy products, how can I get enough calcium?
Dr Rob Hicks, Spring Chicken GP tells us:
There are lots of foods that contain calcium – needed for healthy bones and teeth – that someone with a dairy intolerance can consume. These include tofu, fish containing small edible bones such as salmon and sardines, and green leafy vegetables. Some dairy-free products contain added calcium. A consultation with a dietitian would probably help you identify a wide range of suitable foods.
Vitamin D is needed for absorption of calcium. Most of the vitamin D in the body is made in the skin in response to sunlight – around 10 minutes twice a day throughout the summer should provide enough, taking care not to burn the skin. There’s also vitamin D in oily fish, eggs and milk.
Ask your doctor about whether you should take a calcium and vitamin D supplement.
