Comedy Genius - Our Top 5 Billy Connolly Performances.

Unfortunately, this year Billy Connolly has announced he is stepping down to focus on becoming even more 'windswept and interesting'.

The 'Big Yin' will no longer be touring after 50 years in the business. Partly due to a desire to relax on the shores of Loch Lomond and partly due to his relatively recent Parkinson's diagnosis.

The Glaswegian comedian who has made a very fine living out of telling it like it is wasn't about to take any 'nonsense' from his old friend Michael Parkinson who recently claimed that Billy had been 'dulled' by the age-related disease. Billy replied that perhaps Parky should stick to 'selling funerals' in reference to Michael Parkinson's life insurance ads.

Billy Connolly started in show business way back in the early '70s, having transformed himself from rebel rousing folk talent alongside friend Gerry Rafferty in The Humblebums to irreverent, side-splitting 'windswept and interesting' comedian.

Billy was perhaps 'alternative' before there was such a thing, nothing was out of bounds for Billy's humour and his fans loved it. His talent knew no bounds from chart-topping singles and comedy albums (33 in total so far) to worldwide sell-out tours to his BAFTA-nominated performance in Mrs Brown alongside the wonderful Judi Dench.

Life is supposed to be fun. It's not a job or occupation. We're here only once and we should have a bit of a laugh.

Billy has brought me such joy over the years. The songs, the films, the jokes. Amazing, an inspiration. Thanks Billy, I, m sure you, ll have lots to do even if not touring.

I was lucky enough to be featured briefly on a British TV show that was a tribute to Billy. I was able to share how he shaped my ability to swear – with a Scottish accent – most effectively! My husband and I saw him perform every time he toured in Canada and we will miss those shows. Enjoy becoming even more windswept and interesting, Billy!

Many years ago I attended the Girvan Folk Club weekend with my husband Dick, who had booked to attend a guitar workshop.
As I waited seated in an alcove outside the workshop door, a man approached wanting to go into the room – I told him it had started and that the numbers were full up, he said ‘nae bother hen thanks’.
Then he said is that a bodhran you have in that case – I said yes, so he said – can you play it – I said yes, ok he said let’s have a wee session here, and we did.
That man was Billy Connolly. When my husband came out with all the others he said were you bored waiting? I said no not really I’ve been playing tunes with Billy Connolly (as you do).
Happy memory.
